Dr. Josh Thomas, CEO and Executive Director of NAMI Delaware, recently announced his retirement after 11 years. As the organization’s longest-standing leader, Dr. Thomas oversaw a significant expansion of mental health services across Delaware.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to lead NAMI Delaware and work with an incredible team here,Dr. Thomas said. “Our board of directors, advisory board members, and volunteer leaders are amazing and have positioned the organization well for the future.”

During his tenure, Dr. Thomas prioritized the advancement of NAMI Delaware’s mission. Under his leadership, staff and revenue doubled, outreach and housing sites in Southern Delaware increased, and NAMI Delaware became the premier Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) provider since its inception in 2014. Dr. Thomas also championed legislation for dedicated 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline funding, increased school-based mental health clinicians, excused absences for mental health days, and postvention resources for students.

These achievements were noticed, with NAMI Delaware being named Outstanding NAMI State Organization in 2022 for its work in outreach, advocacy, and education.

“Josh put his heart and soul into NAMI Delaware, transforming it into a thriving and effective organization that served more people living with mental illness and their families than ever before, Board President Mary Berger said.

As the board finalizes a long-term leadership plan, Dr. Doug Ferguson, Chief Operating Officer and, Deputy Executive Director, will be interim CEO. NAMI Delaware continues to be steadfast in its mission to support, educate, and advocate until there is a cure for severe and persistent mental illness.

While we already miss Dr. Thomas, we are excited for him as he embarks on this new chapter with his family.
